I’m Matthew Walsh

I spend much of my time as a furniture maker and fine woodworking instructor in Ontario, Canada.

Most of what I write begins with something small: a question from a student, a mistake at the bench, a moment of frustration, generosity, patience.

This site is where I keep those observations. I write about woodworking and teaching, but also about capability, character, memory, and the things meaningful work seems to reveal about us. Some of it is practical. Some of it is personal. Much of it is simply an attempt to pay attention before the moment passes.

Beyond Our Benches

An ongoing collection of reflections drawn from the workshop, the classroom, and the small moments of everyday life, exploring the character revealed through meaningful work.

Below is a glimpse of finished pieces, experiments and moments from the shop.
